| WA FLORAL ART SOCIETY INC 'AT HOME' 2009 Meeting
The West Australian Floral Art Society Inc held a very successful floral afternoon on Saturday the 13th June 2009, where invitations were extended to floral art clubs, floristry schools, fellow flower arrangers, guests, family and friends to share in our special mid year meeting titled 'AT HOME'.
The staging of the Societies annual Members Championship competitions were also conducted during this meeting, providing a 'Floral Feast' of textures, forms, patterns and colours showcasing the floral talent of members from this Society.
A special demonstration titled 'Fabric of Life', was conducted during the 'At Home' meeting by talented Floral Designer and TAFE Floristry lecturer, BEV MILLING (see images below).

At
Home Demonstration - Report by Eileen Wenn 'Fabric of Life’ our demonstration by Bev Milling held us all in awe of her very creative skills and techniques as she applied them to her stunning creations with meticulous workmanship. Bev’s
first designs were in a white theme with carnation petal covered containers and
white iris. This was a favourite of many and we knew we were in for a
treat with a very special demonstration by our creative guest demonstrator. The
audience was intrigued with Bev’s jewellery pieces. Fashioned in plant
material featuring threaded red berries, white orchids, fabric coils and covered
rings, WAFAS President, Dianne modelled these giving everyone a close look
and opportunity to photograph the exquisite contrast of textures of forms in
these creations. For
a ‘Cup Day’ Hat, Bev had spent many hours preparing the asymmetrical cream
hat frame and fabric covered rings. Round disks covered in yellow petals
were the focal point of the hat accented by green fabric covered rings and long
reed placements. Once again the contrast of texture and the workmanship
was exquisite. The stunning hat design was finished with the addition of
two very trendy hat pins made from knitting needles. As
Bev worked through her many pieces wearing her Floraco apron, the audience
enjoyed and loved her accent, bubbly nature and stories of how her designs
developed. Using
the frame she made with branches, gum nuts and winter leaves, Bev made a
colourful hand held bouquet. This bouquet had lovely use of groupings, space and
rhythm that was emphasised with the addition of wire curves that Bev had covered
in fabric. To
the delight of the audience Bev called upon a friend and fellow Floristry
Lecturer in the audience, Clement Lee, to join her on stage to assist her hang
orchids and rings from a purchased bouquet frame Bev had extended
with branches and fabric covered wires creating a spacious design with
much rhythm . She then added another completed piece to make it a pair. Another
favourite in the audience was the horizontal red and black design using palm
spathes, black gutter guard and a quilling technique. Bev’s
finale piece was certainly breath taking. With the very generous
sponsorship from Harry at Floraco, Bev used 18 bunches of white gerberas, she
stripped all the petals to cover two very large spheres. The centres of
the gerberas were used to cover the third sphere The spheres were then placed
into a very tall grouping of bamboo branches. While
I can’t describe all of her designs in our newsletter, we were very privileged
to share with Bev her passion for nature, her cutting edge techniques and her
skills of contemporary design. We were treated to a World Class
Demonstration! A few days later Bev told me she thoroughly enjoyed working through the inspiration, planning and presentation of her demonstration for WAFAS.
